Fort Chapora was built by the Portuguese to check the Muslim and Maratha invasions in 1617. The fort kept changing hands from Marathas to Portuguese. In 1684, the Maratha king, Sambhaj won over Portuguese and got the fort but due to the intense opposition from the locals, Marathas had to withdrew their force in 1717. Portugues rebuilt the fort with underground tunnels to escape in case of an emergency only to lose it again in 1739 to the Marathas. They regained the control two years later but finally abandoned it completely in 1892. This fort is also in ruins but only attracts the visitors because of its history.
