Fort Aguada has been invincible with its strategic location at the estuary of the river Mandovi. Built in 1612 to check the invasions from the Dutch and the Marathas, it proved to be the only fort that remained unconquered during the 450-yr long Portuguese rule. Its walls are 5 m high and 1.3 m wide. There is a large well and a number of springs around the fort providing fresh drinking water to the voyagers. The highlights of the fort is a 13 m high lighthouse built in 1864 and renovated in 1976 that once featured the a gigantic bell retrieved from the ruins of the St. Augustus monastery at Old Goa. The bell has now been moved to the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception church at Panaji. Some of is buildings are still used as a prison, which is the largest one in Goa .
